Abstract: This working paper examines how some educators in the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) consortium use the WIDA English language proficiency (ELP) standards. Many educators see the standards as a tool that can guide them in differentiating instruction and supporting language development among English Language Learners (ELLs). WIDA shares this view and invests considerable resources in designing, revising, and publishing the standards. In addition, all professional development WIDA provides is, in some ways, linked to the standards. The study described here is WIDA’s first attempt to systematically assemble and analyze evidence related to this assumption.
