More Than Just Skill: Inequities, Identities and Mathematics Remediation Among Black Undergraduates
December 2, 2015, 12:30 - 1:30 pm
Wisconsin Idea Room, 159 Education Building, 1000 Bascom Mall
Gregory Larnell
Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction, University of Illinois at Chicago
Gregory Larnell studies the sociopolitical dynamics of mathematics education, including the experiences of black undergraduates in university-level, non-credit-bearing “remedial” and “developmental” mathematics courses. Larnell will discuss the results of his studies, which center on three ideas: identity threats, identity "satisficing" and the cooling-out phenomenon. He will also discuss how math education can move toward an intersection of identity, power and mathematics learning experience.
