Carl A. Grant Lecture: Supporting Young English Learners and Their Teachers
October 21, 2015, 12:00 - 1:00 pm
Educational Sciences Room 259, 1025 West Johnson Street
Celia Genishi
Professor Emerita of Education, Teachers College, Columbia University
Genishi's talk focuses on children who are English learners, and how teachers might support them in early-childhood settings.
Believing that bilingualism is a valued asset, Genishi presents case studies of children in pre-k to second-grade as they learn English and draw on their home languages. She also addresses the question of how teachers might build a pedagogy that supports language and literacy learning, but also leaves openings for child play and choice.
