Each year, hundreds of thousands of students enroll in American schools and are identified as English learners (ELs). These multilingual students retain their EL status until they reach state-established criteria for English proficiency, as measured through annual standardized English language assessments. Dr. Sahakyan’s work examines multilingual students’ English proficiency in WIDA Consortium states, assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on outcomes and documenting disparities between multiple EL subgroups.
