Assessing English Language Learners in Secondary Schools
May 17, 2010
WCER’s FLARE project helps secondary school teachers measure the progress of English Language Learners in academic classes. Ongoing feedback from FLARE assessments helps teachers target learning objectives and more effectively prepare students for academic language proficiency and post-secondary academic success. The FLARE formative assessment system is part of the system of standards and assessments offered by the project World Class Instruction Design and Assessment (WIDA) http://www.wida.us/. FLARE references nationally recognized standards which include ACT College Readiness Standards, NAEP's 8th & 12th grade reading, writing, mathematics, science and history frameworks, The Center for Educational Policy Research's Standards for Success, and Achieve American Diploma Project's (ADP) middle and high school Benchmarks
