Excitement Builds Around WIDA Conferences

October 23, 2012

When WIDA released its 2012 Amplification of the English Language Development Standards in August, the organization’s leadership knew educators would be excited to see the latest on methods for teaching English language learners. But no one expected the overwhelming level of interest shown by attendees at the first two of four events designed to introduce the new standards to WIDA consortium members across the country. Events in Madison in August and in Denver in September filled beyond capacity. The enthusiasm has carried over into WIDA’s future events, as waiting lists have already formed for the sold-out conference in Charlotte on Oct. 25 and 26, as well as for the Boston event on Nov. 8 and 9. Educators are clamoring to get their first peek at the freshly-introduced guidelines, which adhere more closely to nationally recognized teaching standards and include expanded strands in all subjects based on specific cognitive functions. Experts on the new standards, including WIDA executive director Dr. Tim Boals, lead developer Dr. Margo Gottlieb, director of professional development Mariana Castro, assistant director of educator resources Andrea Cammilleri and many other WIDA staff members will make presentations and run workshops at both conferences. Registration is now closed, but those seeking more information should contact PDinfo@WIDA.us or visit the conference website here.
