Finding the Fabulous Teachers

For Dave Heistad, evaluating teacher performance is an important way to recognize what he calls the “fabulous teachers.” The real value in assessment comes when “Value Added Measures “(VAM) are included. Heistad is a researcher at WCER’s Value-Added Research Center. He also works as a program evaluator and researcher in Minneapolis Public Schools. VAM is a system that analyzes student growth according to more than one overall standard applied to all students. Instead, it includes information about where individual students are at the start of a school year, and where they end up.
