Raising English Learner Achievement in STEM Subjects

March 4, 2013

Elizabeth Cranley and colleagues at WIDA are helping classroom teachers to make core STEM content accessible to English Learner students (ELs) and to put them on the path to college and career readiness.  The project uses a “coach-the-coach” approach to build capacity for best practices in EL instruction at regional, district, and school levels. The program provides intensive, multiyear training in technical and instructional coaching to regional EL experts from Wisconsin. These regional experts will then coach local district and school EL specialists to enable them, in turn, to effectively collaborate with STEM content-area teachers who work with ELs in their schools. The project offers evidence-based professional development to educators in largely rural districts who will learn how to  better collect, analyze, and use data to make instructional decisions.
