Supporting Dual Language Children

March 18, 2013

Early Dual Language Learners (children, ages birth through 5 years) have been learning more than one language since birth, or begin to learn another language after their home language is partially established. Very young children are still developing their home language as they acquire English. The term Early Dual Language Learner describes the nature of most young children’s total language development during these important early years. To provide appropriate services, educators must understand the similarities and differences between monolingual learning and dual language learning. WIDA staff are working with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to develop resources, professional development, and technical assistance to community partners regarding culturally and linguistically responsive practices.
