U.S. scholars learn “new ways of imagining” research data in summer institute on campus

The four-day course in QE offered in the summer institute features lectures and panels mixed with hands-on work in pairs or teams. Topics covered include coding, discourse models, criticality, grants, fairness, software, and an introduction to the EA lab’s chief QE-derived modeling tool, Epistemic Network Analysis, or ENA. In addition to research topics in education-related issues, institute fellows in July were using QE in fields as varied as trauma surgery, artificial intelligence, marine conservation, and criminology. Attendees came from universities in 11 states: Florida, New Mexico, Ohio, Massachusetts, California, New York, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Texas, and Wisconsin.

MLRC to host new online Speakers Series starting Thursday, Aug. 1

The MLRC Speaker Series highlights current research related to the teaching and learning of multilingual learners. Every first Thursday of the month starting Aug. 1, a researcher or team of researchers is invited to share insights, findings, or learnings from their research. The talks are presented online via Zoom, and recordings are posted within one week of the event.

Important process changes made for ASAC professional development grants

Effective this fiscal year, which started July 1, PD grants to eligible academic staff, university staff, and postdoctoral employees will no longer be awarded on a rolling basis until funds are depleted.

Instead, two defined application windows have been created to guide the submission of award requests across the academic year. The first window for application submissions opens on Sept. 16 and closes on Oct. 18 for fall 2024 requests; the second window opens Feb. 3 and closes March 7 for spring 2025 requests. Decisions after each window closes will be made within a week.

New WIDA report finds post-pandemic English learner proficiency scores continue to drop
